Liverpool have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne this summer, with Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reporting the Reds have tabled a formal offer for the Belgian midfielder.
The 33-year-old is set to leave City as a free agent after a decade of dominance.
Di Marzio’s report claims Liverpool have joined Napoli in pursuing the playmaker, leveraging his childhood affinity for the club and friendship with Virgil van Dijk.
The move would mark one of the most audacious transfers in Premier League history, given De Bruyne’s iconic status at City-where he won six league titles -many of them directly competing against the Reds – and the Champions League while registering 285 goal contributions.
Liverpool are conscious of the age profile of their squad, which already includes several players in their thirties.
The Belgian has also faced significant injury issues over the past two seasons.
Last season, he missed around five months due to hamstring surgery, sidelining him for approximately 128 days.
This season, recurring thigh problems have limited him to just 14 Premier League starts so far, with ongoing fitness concerns keeping him from full match sharpness.
These injury setbacks, combined with his age and high wage demands, present major obstacles to any potential move to Liverpool, a club mindful of balancing experience with the need for long-term squad sustainability.
And it seems all of these factors combined with his likely wage demands mean no move will be forthcoming.
The Athletic’s James Pearce has come out to flatly deny the reports, taking to X to respond to one curious fan:
“There’s been no offer from Liverpool.”
While De Bruyne’s pedigree is undeniable, it does not seem like a step Arne Slot or indeed the Anfield hierachy would take.
Napoli and Aston Villa are believed to be among the clubs sniffing around the Belgian.
