It seems claims from earlier in the season that it would be a big summer for Liverpool FC were not misplaced.
The Premier League champions are nearing the completion of a club-record €150 million (£126 million) deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and finalizing a £45 million move for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.
Add the £30m paid for Jeremie Frimpong, and the club is racking up a very hefty summer bill.
It is believed that the Anfield club will offload several first-team players to balance their ambitious summer transfer activity.
Darwin Nunez’s anticipated departure has emerged as the cornerstone of Liverpool’s fundraising efforts.
Despite being the club’s record £85 million signing in 2022, the Uruguayan striker has struggled for consistency, starting just eight Premier League matches last season.
Liverpool rejected a £60 million offer from Al-Nassr in January but are now engaging with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal over a potential deal.
Left-back Kostas Tsimikas, deemed surplus following Kerkez’s impending arrival, could fetch £10–15 million.
Academy products Tyler Morton and Ben Doak complete the exit list, with the Reds seeking £20 million for Morton and a reduced fee could be required for the injury-plagued Doak.
And now this long-speculated notion has been corroborated
The Athletic’s Gregg Evans reports that the club could look to make moves for a striker and centre-back – but it will depend on outgoings this summer:
“Whether Liverpool feel the need to recruit a new No 9 and another central defender will depend on future outgoings,” he wrote
“It’s also unclear at this stage whether the signing of Wirtz would give Slot enough variety in the attacking areas should Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa leave, so there may be room for another addition.”
“Although the central defensive positions are currently well covered, Liverpool would feel more secure if Ibrahima Konate extended his contract.”
“The club continues to look at centre-backs under the age of 24 as part of their succession planning strategy”
