The Athletic has revealed what areas the club is looking to sign in after Hugo Ekitike is officially sealed.
The Reds’ 2025 transfer window has seen a record outlay approaching £300 million, propelling the reigning Premier League champions into expenditure territory once reserved for the likes of a Chelsea or Manchester City.
Many supporters are delighted that Liverpool is behaving like the global powerhouse its honours list proves.
The sense of euphoria stems from more than raw numbers.
Fans remember frustration when Fenway Sports Group prioritised sustainability over splashy recruitment, even after 2019’s Champions League triumph and 2020’s long-awaited league crown.
By sanctioning marquee fees for Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, the ownership signalled complete faith in Arne Slot’s vision and delivered the star-quality depth supporters demanded.
And if the dream could not get any better, it seems that the club is not stopping at Hugo Ekitike – who arrived on Merseyside today for his medical.
Richard Hughes and some of the medical team reportedly remained to handle Ekitike’s medical examination.
Assuming routine clearance, the Frenchman will join up with his new teammates in Hong Kong this week.
And after Fabrizio Romano confirmed that more signings will arrive after the Frenchman, the Athletic have revealed that another centre-back signing is ideal for Arne Slot:
“Central defence is the only real issue now as the squad is light on cover following Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen,” Gregg Evans wrote.
“Slot would ideally like another senior centre-back to call on alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez, as his preference is to have two senior players fighting for every position.”
“Watara Endo could be used in times of need, but Liverpool are planning on using the market to fill the gap?
Several options, including Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, are under consideration.”
The Ibrahima Konate contract situation only exacerbates the need for an additional defender, with Real Madrid cirling around the Frenchman.
Konate sees his deal expire next summer, with no signs of an extension forthcoming.
