Liverpool fans didn’t just shake the stands, they moved the Earth during the club’s title-winning 5-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield.
A study conducted by the University of Liverpool has revealed that the celebration following key goals, especially Alexis Mac Allister’s thunderous strike, triggered seismic tremors measurable on earthquake-detecting equipment.
Arne Slot’s side clinched the 20th top-flight title in the club’s history on April 27.
According to Earth scientists, the passion from the 60,415-strong crowd registered tremors similar to a small earthquake.
The biggest shake?
Mac Allister’s stunning 24th-minute goal, which took Liverpool 2-1 up, hit a peak magnitude of 1.74 on the Richter scale.
The goal sent Anfield into raptures, and the ground into motion.
The seismic data was captured using advanced equipment by researchers from the University of Liverpool’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences in collaboration with the club (via BBC).

Professor Ben Edwards described the moments as “bursts of ground-shaking, triggered by the sheer passion of Liverpool fans.”
“Their enthusiasm was literally powerful enough to move the Earth.”
Dr Farnaz Kamranzad added that each celebration left a “seismic fingerprint of collective joy,” with the tremors “written into the Earth’s memory long after the final whistle.”
Other goals also made their mark:
Mo Salah’s goal: 1.60
Destiny Udogie’s own goal: 1.35
Cody Gakpo’s header: 1.03
Luis Diaz’s equaliser: 0.64
Seismologist Callum Harrison noted the signals were “comparable to a small earthquake”, similar to those seen at major concerts like Taylor Swift’s in 2023.
Dr Antoine Septier hopes this project inspires young scientists and even sparks ideas for using seismic feedback to enhance the stadium experience.
“I hope showing this data will spark innovative ideas for potential applications.”
While the tremors couldn’t be felt by fans in the stands, their celebrations have left a mark beneath the turf at Anfield — one more unique record in Liverpool’s incredible title-winning season.
