The Man Who Was King Review

Anthony Quinn’s Keegan: The Man Who Was King isn’t your standard football biography.

It’s part life story, part love letter to 1970s and ’80s football, and part trip down memory lane for anyone who remembers when players were still human-sized and perms ruled the terraces.

The book takes you from Keegan’s scrappy beginnings in Doncaster, through his glory years at Liverpool, the bold leap to Hamburg that left thirteen-year-old Anthony in bits, the highs and lows with England, and his swansong at Southampton and Newcastle (plus the odd single that proved footballers should stick to football).

Keegan performs his hit single, Head over Heels

Liverpool fan Quinn clearly loves the game and has a soft spot for Keegan, but he’s not afraid to poke fun when Kev’s temper, stubbornness, or showmanship got the better of him.

The tone is chatty, with plenty of detours into 70s pop culture (comparing Keegan to Cliff Richard as opposed to George Best’s Elvis image), adverts, and TV moments, which makes it feel like you’re in the pub with a mate who knows his football inside out.

.

Quinn uses Keegan’s career to reflect on the shifting business of football, from the days of restrictive contracts to the emergence of players as brands.

Alongside match accounts, we get portraits of figures like Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, and Don Revie, all seen through the prism of Keegan’s career.

The book reflects the energy Keegan brought to the pitch, the way he worked every ounce out of his talent, and how he helped change the way footballers handled their careers

If you want a lively, funny, and nostalgic read about one of the game’s biggest - yet fun-sized - colossal characters, this book delivers.
