The Times have confirmed the latest news about Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
Reports emerged on Tuesday that the American consortium led by Liverpool’s majority shareholder John Henry was in talks to buy Spanish club Getafe.
FSG had previously resisted following the multi-club trend pioneered by Manchester City’s owners, who now control 13 clubs globally under the City Football Group umbrella.
However, they have now embraced that model and are working to build a multi-club model.
This has been done wit the help of Michael Edwards, FSG’s CEO of Football.
The latest interest in Getafe isn’t FSG’s first in their multi-club pursuit.
In July 2024, both FSG and French outfit Bordeaux confirmed negotiations were underway for the Liverpool owners to purchase the troubled French club, but stadium rental concerns pulled the plug on that deal.
However, they are back in talks to buy a new club, with Spanish publication AS revealing that ther has been some preliminary talks between the Liverpool principle owners and the decision-makers at Getafe.
Paul Joyce of The Times has now confirmed the news.
Writing for The Times, he said:
“Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool, has turned its attention to the La Liga side Getafe as it looks to develop a multi-club model?
There has been interest previously in Bordeaux and Malaga, but the Madrid-based Getafe, who finished 13th in the Spanish top flight last season, have now come under consideration.”
Getafe’s president, Ángel Torres, has repeatedly stated his intention to step down and sell the club by 2027 at the latest.
He is determined to secure the club’s future by finding a buyer who is not only financially capable but also deeply knowledgeable about football – a bracket that FSG matches.
Ultimately, the president wants to make sure Getafe is left in trustworthy and experienced hands.
The club’s ambitious new stadium project, which is now underway, is said to be a major draw for FSG.
This project includes the construction of a modern Coliseum stadium, expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028, with enhanced seating, VIP amenities, and a new design.
Additionally, a new Sports City development next to the stadium will further strengthen Getafe’s training and youth academy infrastructure.
