Liverpool’s summer transfer business reached new heights this week, with Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz on the brink of finalizing a British-record move to Merseyside.
The Reds have agreed a £116.5 million package to secure Wirtz’s services, committing £100 million up front and a further £16.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
Should every clause be triggered, this transfer will eclipse the previous British record of £115 million held by Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo move in 2023.
Wirtz, who scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists in 25 Bundesliga starts last season, is expected to undergo his medical later this week on Friday.
Wirtz is currently on holiday following Germany’s UEFA Nations League duties and is not expected to return until Wednesday (today).
The German was pictured holidaying alongside new signing Jeremie Frimpong, with the right back posting a sun-kissed snap of himself and Wirtz aboard a luxury yacht, captioned “Vacation mode with my bro.”
For Bayer Leverkusen, the sale of Wirtz also sets a new record as their most expensive outgoing transfer.
The 22-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2030.
Meanwhile, an interesting detail has emerged from the transfer this week.
German outlet BILD has revealed the involvement of Wirtz’s parents in negotiations.
Unlike many modern footballers, the 22-year-old has not been managed by a traditional agent.
Instead, his mother and father have represented his interests throughout the process, even accompanying him on a trip to Blackpool as discussions with Liverpool intensified.
As a result, it is Wirtz’s parents who will receive the commission usually paid to agents.
According to the report the German international’s parents will receive around €10 million over the course of his Liverpool contract.
They add that the medical examinations for Wirtz are scheduled to begin on Friday and may continue into Saturday.
All the necessary paperwork for the transfer has already been signed, marking the final stage before the player is officially unveiled as a Liverpool player.
