There is nothing like it as a football fan.

Some are more used to it than others, while some this season - Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur - have experienced it for the first time in their lives.

Newcastle won the League Cup by beating Liverpool for their first trophy in 56 years, Palace beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup, their first trophy in their 119-year history.

Tottenham, meanwhile, ended their 17-year wait for a major honour when they won the Europa League at Manchester United's expense.

It saw a big party in Bilbao and one talkSPORT presenter removing his shirt on air in celebration.

Liverpool, though, got over their League Cup loss by winning the Premier League title to make them among English football's most successful clubs.

And despite the loss, United are still seen as one of the dominant forces on these shores.

Here, talkSPORT.com looks at the teams that have won more honours than anyone else.

The criteria leaves out Super Cups and Community Shields to focus on major trophies won over the course of the season rather than one off games.

In the case of the Community Shield it is a non-competitive game.

A Premier League regular nowadays, Wolves were one of the first and best to kick off association football.

One of the founding members of the Football League in 1988, they won their first FA Cup in 1893 and then three top flight league titles in the ‘50s.

More honours came, but the last major one was the 1980 League Cup before a disastrous decade saw the Midlands side plummet as low at the fourth tier.

They have had many trophy lifts since, but just those for promotion, with arguably their biggest modern success a run to the Europa League quarter finals under Nuno Espirito Santo in 2020.

Eleventh on this list probably does Forest an injustice given how incredible three of their nine trophy triumphs were.

Early winners of the FA Cup in 1898, it was a massive wait until their second in 1959.

Everything changed in 1975 when Brian Clough and Peter Taylor arrived and became one of the most famous management duos to ever do it.

Promoted to the top flight in 1977 they won the league the following year and then two League Cups.

If that wasn’t incredible enough, they then claimed two Champions League titles - then called the European Cup, and only eight teams have ever won more.

Two more League Cups came in the late ‘80s and then their most recent honour, the Full Members' Cup in 1992 - although it wasn't a major title.

The team struggled from then on, spending much of their time in the third tier and then an agonising 14 years in the Championship before their 2022 top flight return.

Back competing for a return to European football, it’s hard to imagine any team, let alone Forest, ever replicating their remarkable success in the ‘70s.

A founding member of both the Football League in 1888 and Premier League in 1992, Blackburn have been their for English football's biggest moments, even with their own lows.

Rovers won the top flight in 1912 and 1914, before waiting until 1995 to win the Premier League after owner Jack Walker's cash injection that brought in star striker Alan Shearer.

Relegated in 2012, they're more associated with the second tier nowadays, which was also the case after their triumphs at the start of the 20th century.

Blackburn also won five of their six FA Cups in the 1880s, while their most recent success was the League Cup in 2002.

Newcastle racked up most of their titles before living memory, with three league championships and an FA Cup between 1900 and 1910.

More leagues and cups came in the ‘30s, but it was the ‘50s when they really started to make Wembley their second home with three more FA Cups to take their total to an impressive six.

Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ threatened to add more honours in the ‘90s, but ended up with five runners-up medals, two in the Premier League.

The wait for a first major trophy since 1969 went all the way until 2025, when they finally took the League Cup, convincingly beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final after heartbreak at the same stage against Manchester United a year earlier.

One of the world’s oldest football clubs, Everton claimed their first title with the league in 1891.

Either side of a shock relegation in 1930, the Toffees won six more trophies and were spearheaded by the legendary Dixie Dean who had an astonishing 60-goal season in 1928.

The theme of purple patches would continue as they didn’t win another honour until the ‘60s when they added five in nine years (three major) before another couple of decades off and a glorious ‘80s which saw eight titles in five years (four major).

The ‘90s was similarly historic, with Everton taking their league title total to nine and FA Cup tally to five, but they haven’t won an honour since 1996.

Maybe their new Bramley Moore Dock stadium and a settled ownership situation can change that.

Famously trophyless since 2008 until their Europa League win over Manchester United, which saw a farcical trophy ceremony, Tottenham were one of England’s most common winners during the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

Two time league champions, much of their trophy count comes from their eight FA Cup wins with only Manchester United and rivals Arsenal winning the cup more.

Spurs were also the first British side to win a European competition with the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963, while their latest triumph in Europe means they have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League three times.

As one of the oldest teams in world football, Villa’s success is certainly weighted towards the past with six of their seven league titles coming before 1910 and the same number of their seven FA Cups before 1920.

The ‘80s were the real glory years, though, as they won the Champions League final against Bayern Munich and became one of just six English sides to achieve the feat.

Trophyless since their fifth League Cup in 1996, there are signs things could be changing under Europa League king Unai Emery.

Often ridiculed for being ‘founded in 2004’ when Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich bought the team, Chelsea fans can point to their earlier successes.

The Blues won their first league title in 1954, first FA Cup in 1970 and first League Cup in 1965, and had a strong run either side of the turn of the millennium.

The majority of their honours have since flowed post-Abramovich takeover, with five Premier League titles and FA Cups, three League Cups, and most importantly the Holy Grail of the Champions League twice.

They also have the impressive honour of most other European Cups of English sides with four, two in the Europa League and two with the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

While Chelsea may have thought they’d trademarked nouveau riche in England, Man City took the idea and ran with it after their Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008.

Much like the Blues, this is again no RB Leipzig style situation with City winning the league and League Cup twice and the FA Cup four times before their takeover, but boy did it help after.

City have won the Premier League eight times since then, six with the legendary Pep Guardiola, who also bagged the club’s first Champions League during an incredible European treble season in 2023.

Six League Cups have also been grabbed post-takeover, giving City the kind of rise that could scare the top three ahead of them.

Record FA Cup winners with 14 titles, that trophy was also Arsenal’s last big success in 2020 upon Mikel Arteta’s arrival.

The Gunners are now back challenging for honours in the Premier League and Champions League and appear to have exercised the demons of the post-Arsene Wenger era.

What an era it was, though, with the French coach winning 17 honours in north London including one famous unbeaten 'Invincibles' campaign in the Premier League.

Before him it was George Graham who had his own era in the ‘90s and ‘80s with two league titles and League Cups as well as an FA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

But those two modern coaches are far from defining a team who were dominant in the ‘30s under Herbert Chapman, winning the league five times.

That elusive Champions League still evades Arsenal with their best effort a 2006 final under Wenger, but when it comes to domestic titles, they’re one of the very best.

No era has defined any football club in world football more than Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious 27-year stint at Old Trafford within which he won a massive 38 honours including an astonishing 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

Yet it’s certainly not just about him, with Matt Busby’s era from the end of World War Two to the late ‘60s seeing five league titles, two FA Cups and their first of three European Cups.

So big are United that even in their constantly derided post-Ferguson decline, they’ve still picked up more trophies than most with seven titles, most recently a pair of domestic cups under Erik ten Hag.

Nevertheless, it’s still been nothing like under Ferguson or Busby, with a league title far off, and competing in the Champions League often just a dream.

A 20th Premier League win in 2024/25 has put Liverpool back on their perch, which Ferguson once vowed to ‘knock them off’.

He certainly did, but two league titles under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot have changed the outlook.

Now level with United for titles, the tiebreaker is almost certainly won by the Reds, who have won the Champions League six times, twice as much as United with the second most of English teams with three.

Liverpool are also record ten-time League Cup winners, and like United, have continued to claim titles under various managers even in their down periods.

Slot is certainly a legend for winning the league in his debut campaign, but he still has a way to go to match Klopp’s eight.

In fact, Bill Shankly even won more than that with ten, while his replacement, Bob Paisley, took 20, including three European Cups, setting the Reds up as England’s most storied club.
