Liverpool are on the verge of confirming the signing of 21-year-old left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, securing his services on a five-year deal worth approximately £40 million.
Kerkez arrived on Merseyside on Monday to undergo his medical and finalise personal terms, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that both player and club are eager to complete the transfer swiftly.
The Hungary international arrives as Arne Slot’s solution to bolster the left-flank, with Andy Robertson firmly in the crosshairs of Atletico Madrid as a result.
Many Reds fans have been speculating what shirt number the defender could don once his transfer is complete.
Milos Kerkez began his professional career in 2020 with Hungarian top-flight club ETO FC Gy?r, where he first wore the No.
5 shirt – a number more commonly associated with centre-backs in English football.
During his time at Gy?r, he also sported the No.
11 jerseys.
At Bournemouth, Kerkez has worn the N0.3 shirt, which is the traditional number for a left-back.
However, at Anfield, Wataru Endo currently holds the No.3 jersey.
Should Endo move on – or switch to the vacant No.
6 – Kerkez would inherit the iconic full-back shirt, a fitting nod to his time at Bournemouth.
It seems unlikely that the Japan international will give up his shirt number, so the No.
6 jersey could be a possibility as well.
It last worn by Thiago Alcântara before his 2024 departure.
While normally associated with defensive midfielders, it would be a traditional number for Kerkez at the very least.
Kostas Tsimikas occupies No.
3 heritage.
Interestingly, in the Netherlands during his time with AZ, Kerkez wore the 26 jersey – which is currently held by Andy Robertson.
If the Scot does depart, Kerkez could not only replace Robertson but take his shirt number.
Regardless of his final choice, the Hungarian is clearly very excited to join Liverpool, and the Anfield faithful feel exactly the same way.
