Liverpool are still hopeful of signing Alexander Isak despite seeing a big opening offer turned down on Friday.

Although Newcastle may not agree that the bid sent their way ahead of the weekend was big enough, £120m is still a statement of intent.

And, as Rousing The Kop revealed on Friday, that is how much Liverpool’s opening offer for Isak was.

Unfortunately, Newcastle decided it was not enough and turned the Reds’ down.

It is not over between Isak and Liverpool, but suggestions that the Premier League champions could now walk away have muddied the waters.

As fans scramble to find some clarity on the biggest transfer saga of the summer, here are three scenarios which could happen next.

The first scenario is one which Liverpool supporters will not want to see happen.

Nevertheless, it cannot be completely ruled out that Newcastle simply bat back any and every attempt Liverpool make at signing Isak.

The Magpies have stood firm so far, insisting that either £150m is paid, they find a replacement, or Isak goes nowhere.

After claims that Benjamin Sesko is close to joining Newcastle emerged overnight, it feels unlikely that the Toon will simply slam the door in Liverpool’s faces.

However, if Newcastle insist that Sesko is actually a partner for Isak, or they fail to come down on their valuation at all, then Liverpool could yet walk away.

Of course, there may be no striker arriving for Newcastle, in which case a deal also feels impossible.

If Newcastle do sign Sesko, then the most expected scenario is that they will then be more willing to allow an unhappy Isak to leave.

Liverpool would still need to stump up an extraordinary amount of money, but with Sesko – or someone else – on board, there may be more wiggle room on the fee.

For now, this would seem the most likely course of action.

It also feels like one in which everybody wins.

Newcastle get close to the fee they were looking for and a top striker in Sesko, Liverpool buy their top target and Isak himself is granted his dream move.

The Magpies may also look to sign a second striker before opening the doors on Isak, but if a big name comes through the door, that may be enough to ease their stance.

The third option here is perhaps the nuclear pick.

If Newcastle do not sign a replacement for Isak, the expectation is that Liverpool will indeed be forced to walk away.

With the Geordies’ having difficulties getting deals over the line this summer, there may be some nervousness at Anfield that this may well happen.

However, if Isak is prepared to go scorched earth on his current employers, then it may not matter.

Should the Swede fully down tools and refuse to come back and train with Newcastle, then the Magpies may be backed into a corner.

Current reports suggest that Isak is likely to return to training on Monday.

But if the 25-year-old fails to show, then the pressure will really be ramped up on Newcastle.

In such a scenario the momentum could then swing towards Liverpool, who may feel emboldened to bid again.
