Theo Walcott urges Liverpool to make £40m signing as current star has lost a ‘big fraction’ his pace

Liverpool still want to make more signings this summer and they may be forced into some of them.

The Reds are set for a frantic ending to the transfer window as there are fewer than two weeks until the deadline, yet their team is still in desperate need of reinforcements.

After spending close to £300m, many would have imagined that Liverpool are set for the new season and in perfect shape to defend their title, but this is far from the case.

They still want to bring in a new striker, with their only option being Alexander Isak, while another centre-back is wanted and also needed.

Friday’s game against Bournemouth proved just this, with Theo Walcott believing they must now sign a £40m star due to one of their current players losing all of his pace.

Liverpool have looked a bit shaky all pre-season and the opening game of the season was no different, with the Reds being caught far too often on the counter-attack.

Ibrahima Konate especially struggled during the game, but Walcott singled out Virgil van Dijk for looking slower than he has in the past, with the former Arsenal man believing this is an extra reason to go and sign Marc Guehi.

“For me he’s always been a player that in those one v one situations you’d always put your money on him no problem at all,” Walcott said on the It’s Called Soccer podcast.

“But since that knee injury he’s had as well, I’ve been there myself so I know, you’re always going to lose a big fraction of that pace, you really will.

“I think they are going to need to dip into the market, someone like Guehi who is a bit younger, he’s got the pace as well, and I think he can take over from van Dijk in time, but they need to get him in sooner rather than later.”

Giovanni Leoni is seen as the heir to van Dijk’s throne, so Guehi would be more of a replacement for Konate instead, something that is still needed given his current contract situation.

To some extent, Walcott is correct in saying that Liverpool need to bring Guehi to Anfield this summer, but mainly due to a lack of depth rather than ability or pace in this matter.

Crystal Palace are holding out for £40m, but might sell reluctantly at £35m, although the Reds want to go even cheaper again and do a deal at £30m.

Of course, the Englishman is worth far more than that price, but with the 25-year-old having just one year left on his deal and having no intention to sign a new one, their hands are tied.

Liverpool could wait a year but not only risk missing out on him, but risk going the season short of options, indicating how they need to act quickly.
