Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has defended Thiago Alcantara for the "harsh" criticism aimed at him over the club's recent struggles.

Aldridge's old teammate at Anfield, John Barnes accused Thiago of "slowing play down" which he feels "didn't help" the Reds' front three.

But Aldridge has dismissed both suggestions, telling the Liverpool Echo: "Thiago has come in for some recent criticism after the draw with Manchester United and I find that very harsh.

The midfielder has only just returned from injury and was arguably Liverpool's best performer in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Man Utd.

"That's why I consider that his return to the team can have great influence on Jurgen Klopp's team in the next few months."

Another club legend Dietmar Hamann also claimed Thiago "doesn't really play the Liverpool way."

He’s only played three times in the league since he’s come back and it’s at a time when the front three aren’t clicking.
