In a recent article on Empire of the Kop, football legend Thierry Henry expressed concerns about Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities that are impacting their chances of winning major trophies, especially the UEFA Champions League. Henry highlighted Liverpool’s tendency to concede too many goals as a critical weakness:
“Liverpool… I don’t know, Jamie [Carragher] said it, I do think from already pre-season they concede too many goals, they need to erase that. They got bailed out again the other day against Burnley and you have to find a way to win games… But in the Champions League, if you concede too many goals it’s a tough one to win.” Henry’s analysis came after Liverpool needed a late winner from Virgil van Dijk to narrowly beat Atletico Madrid 3-2, having squandered a 2-0 lead early in the match. Similar situations have played out multiple times this season in both the Premier League and European competitions, where Liverpool has dropped leads and relied on late goals to secure victories.
Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool has shown strong attacking performances but continues to struggle defensively. They have conceded 41 league goals so far in the 2024/2025 Premier League campaign and allowed more goals in their last four league games (seven) than in their first eleven (six). Despite the defensive struggles, Liverpool remain top of the Premier League, indicating a robust mentality and attacking prowess that keep them competitive at the highest level.
Henry also commented on the competitiveness of the Premier League title race, emphasizing that while Liverpool have been impressive, the challenge from Manchester City and Arsenal means no team can afford to falter. Liverpool’s defensive issues, if not resolved, could ultimately hinder their ability to sustain a title challenge across all competitions.
