Thomas Tuchel has already told England fans Elliot Anderson's best position ahead of first call-up

Thomas Tuchel is preparing to announce his first England squad of the season ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

Tuchel took over has the England mens national team head coach in October 2024 and has a 100% record so far in World Cup qualifying.

As the latest set of qualifiers nears, Tuchel will be naming squad with multiple selection dilemmas after the opening two weeks of Premier League action.

Elliot Anderson is one of those dilemmas after the midfielder has impressed immensely during the fledgling season for Nottingham Forest, with Everton’s Jack Grealish another who has given Tuchel a headache.

Anderson has been on Tuchel’s radar for some time, and the Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed he’s due to be called up.

Speaking to The Sun back in March, Tuchel said: “Elliot [Anderson], for example, can still play for the Under-21s so he will be close by at St George’s Park.

“I see Elliot Anderson as a No8, Morgan [Gibbs-White] as a No10 and Callum [Hudson-Odoi] as a winger,” he continued.

“If you look at our squad you can also see they have huge competition on their position – world-class players who have proved themselves on the same level as Nottingham Forest, who have proved themselves in international football and even Champions League.

“They know it.

It is never easy to take the message in.

“But I just can tell everyone that we acknowledge the outstanding season they have and the calls were very close,” Tuchel finished.

Football Inside verdict

It seems almost unheard of to have an international break only three weeks into a new season, but such is the nature of modern football.

As the World Cup, Club World Cup, and Champions League all expand their match offerings, qualification windows have to be squeezed into ever minimising windows.

As a result international coaches, like Tuchel, have had to base their qualification squads off of two or three competitive fixtures (or one if you’re looking at the Bundesliga or Serie A).

It’s difficult to know if performances in the opening pair of Premier League fixtures are true to a player’s overall ability but coaches will be hoping they can take advantage of seversal player’s fast starts to their new campaign.
