Liverpool appeared on the verge of strengthening their defence with England centre-back Marc Guehi after agreeing a £35 million deal with Crystal Palace, including Guehi undergoing a medical in London on transfer deadline day.

However, the move dramatically collapsed when Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner refused to sanction the sale without securing adequate replacements.

Glasner threatened to resign if Guehi was allowed to leave.

Palace’s attempt to sign Brighton’s Igor Julio fell through when the defender chose West Ham, leaving the Eagles without adequate cover in central defence.

Although Palace managed to sign Toulouse’s Jaydee Canvot just before the deadline, the club deemed this insufficient and pulled the plug on Guehi’s transfer before the 7 pm deadline.

This left Guehi staying at Palace, with reports after suggesting that he could consider stepping down as club captain following the transfer saga.

But according to Thomas Tuchel, Guehi has been dealing with all the developments admirably while on England duty and admitted that he and his staff had a chat with the defender when he arrived at St Georges’ Park this week:

“Yes of course we had a chat with him,” Tuchel said when asked about Guehi in his press conference.

“He looks absolutely fine, looks very impressive on the field.”

“He has a couple of very impressive weeks behind him … he is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success.”

“He handles it with respect and with grace and [a] brilliant attitude.”

Liverpool will likely still try to attempt to sign Marc Guehi in the January transfer window or even wait until next summer when he will be a free agent.

The Eagles defender is not expected to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are believed to been on securing him on a free transfer for next summer.
