Newcastle United look set for more summer frustration as Marc Guehi makes a decision on his future.

The Crystal Palace centre-back is once again in demand, with Newcastle understood to be making another push after failing to land him last summer.

However, Tottenham and Liverpool are also understood to be at the table, and it’s the latter where Guehi sees his future, former Premier League scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.

Losing out to Liverpool yet again would be a devastating blow for Eddie Howe, but there are other options available to the Magpies boss.

Brown has now revealed that Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke features prominently on Newcastle’s list of Guehi alternatives.

The five-time Netherlands international has made 91 appearances for the Seagulls across all competitions since joining from NAC Breda in 2020, following a series of loans at Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers.

Van Hecke has established himself as a key player under Fabian Hurzeler, but the German manager will not want to lose him having already parted ways with the likes of Joao Pedro, Pervis Estupinan and Simon Adingra this summer.

While Van Hecke won’t attract the same sort of bidding war we could see for Guehi, getting a deal over the line won’t be that much more straightforward for Newcastle, given Brighton’s reluctance to sell.

Giorgio Scalvini was touted as one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders before an ACL injury ruled him out of Euro 2024.

A shoulder injury then kept the Italian out for even longer, limiting him to just eight appearances across all competitions last season.

And yet, those issues seem to have done little to devalue Scalvini, who still has 107 senior games under his belt for Atalanta, despite the injuries and being just 21 years old.

Scalvini carries all the aggression and positional awareness you’d expect from an Italian centre-back, while also being composed on the ball.

The big problem for Newcastle is that AC Milan have their eye on him and are willing to offer Malick Thiaw to replace him as part of their deal — Thiaw is also being mentioned as a potential Newcastle target.

While Scalvini could cost somewhere in the region of £60million, Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke has revealed (6 July) that the Magpies would only have to pay about half that for Leandro Balerdi.

The Argentina international is Marseille’s captain and a veteran of over 160 games for the French giants, who are reluctant to sell — especially with three years left to run on his contract.

What’s more, Juventus are also understood to be interested in the 26-year-old, leaving Newcastle with even more hurdles to negotiate.

That said, the fee for Balerdi is much more appetising, meaning the Magpies could be willing to hang in the chase a little longer.

There doesn’t seem to be any easy solutions for Newcastle this summer, in any position, with the centre-back market looking just as competitive as the search for a No.9.
