Liverpool are preparing for a big finish to the transfer window and even more top quality signings are set to arrive.

The Reds flew out of the blocks at the beginning of the summer and got deals over the line quickly to ensure they were ready for pre-season.

Now after finishing all of their friendlies, it is clear which areas of the team Arne Slot still thinks need improving, with a new centre-back one of the positions needing a revamp.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is just one name being linked with a move to Anfield, with the Englishman regarded by many as someone who could really be the solution to their current problem.

However, Tim Sherwood believes that Liverpool could be on the verge of a signing even more important, with this coming at the other end of the pitch.

Liverpool were chasing a striker all summer, with Hugo Ekitike looking like the man they settled on and would lead the line for many years to come, or at least that was the plan.

But, with Alexander Isak becoming somewhat available, and then Darwin Nunez departing and leaving a space, the Reds see the Swede as an opportunity too good to refuse.

Sherwood shares a similar belief too, although he thinks that getting Isak over the line is far more important than signing Guehi.

“For me the most important one is Alexander Isak,” Sherwood said on Sky Sports.

“They’ve shown they have the firepower in attack, but if you were to ask Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta which player they do not want to see  join Liverpool, I think they would say Isak.

“He’s a superstar, he’s already rehearsed, and we know what he can do, and I just think he is the one player that the whole neutral football world does not want to see go to Liverpool, because if he does, they are going to be a serious proposition on all fronts.”

As things stand, Liverpool are technically working on both deals at the same time, although all they can currently do with Isak is play the waiting game until Newcastle give them the green light.

Whether Isak or Guehi is more important this summer is redundant in all honesty as both are probably needed just as much as the other.

However, as well as the pair of them, Liverpool still need a few more signings as their squad depth feels a little light despite spending close to £300m.

Young centre-back Giovanni Leoni would be a good addition to the team, with Liverpool closing in on the signing of the 18-year-old, while another winger may also be useful for depth.

It would be no surprise to see the Reds take their summer spending to close to £500m, although if that is the case, then winning the league would be imperative rather than just an aim.
