Timo Werner wasted a glorious chance to put Chelsea ahead against Liverpool and then had a goal ruled by VAR moments later in a frantic few minutes that has summed up his Blues career so far.
The striker, who joined the west London club from RB Leipzig in a £45million deal last summer, failed to capitalise from point blank range after Thiago Alcantara failed to head the ball clear.
Just minutes later he thought he put his side ahead after delightfully chipping Alisson Becker before using his lightning-quick pace to beat Ozan Kabak and poke the ball home.
VAR had other ideas, however, and ruled it out as his arm was offside by millimetres.
The visitors got the breakthrough they had been threatening just before half-time when N’Golo Kante’s quick ball out to the left wing picked out Mason Mount and he cut inside to fire home.
It was a superb strike from Mount and his fourth goal of the campaign.
