Man City could be about to make a serious play to sign Newcastle right-back Tino Livramento as Rico Lewis weighs up a lucrative switch to Nottingham Forest.

Livramento has emerged as one of the best young full-backs in the world since his move to Newcastle from Southampton in 2023 for an initial £32million [BBC] fee.

He signed a five-year contract upon his arrival at St James’ Park, and Chelsea supporters will feel like their club made a mistake in selling him to the Saints in 2021, given his impressive form in the two years since.

The 22-year-old’s strong showings in the last campaign has seen him linked away from Tyneside, with former scout Mick Brown revealing to Football Insider in July that Man City are set to step up their interest in Livramento as Pep Guardiola aims to bring in a new right-back following Kyle Walker’s exit.

Football Insider revealed on 6 July that Newcastle are doing all they can to try and keep Livramento right now, and The Times have reported that they are readying a six-year contract offer for the England international, but their efforts could be in vain if the Citizens plot a move with Lewis potentially on his way out.

The right-back spot looks there for the taking at Man City right now, with only Lewis and Matheus Nunes as genuine options in the position for Guardiola as it stands.

According to a new report from talkSPORT (15 August), Lewis is mulling over a move to Nottingham Forest right now, with the Reds “willing to double” his City wages to convince him to join this summer.

MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES

Lewis is believed to be behind versatile Portuguese midfielder Nunes in the right-back pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, and the chance to join Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to become a key man either there or in central-midfield will surely appeal.

Not only that, but to be earning more at the City Ground will also be a big deal to Lewis at this stage in his career, especially as he last signed fresh terms two years ago when he had only just broken into the senior set-up and so may not be on the kind of wages that reflect his current standing under Guardiola.

City are already in the market for a new right-back, and if Lewis does make the move to Forest soon, then they could well ramp up their efforts to sign Livramento with the Magpies still yet to offer him a bumper new contract.

The 22-year-old is one of the most promising young players in his position across world football, and if City want to continue challenging for titles as the years go on, then bringing him in should be a priority.

Guardiola likely wants to bring Livramento in even if Lewis is to stay, but if he does leave, then the Etihad Stadium outfit need to raid Newcastle before they can convince the former Saints man to sign a new deal.

Football Insider verdict

Former scout Brown revealed to Football Insider before the season even ended that Newcastle were putting plans in place for Livramento’s exit amid interest from Man City, and that comes as no surprise based off his impressive Premier League performances in the last few years.

Newcastle have faced a major crisis in the transfer market over the course of the summer, with Alexander Isak wanting a move away and the Magpies missing out on numerous key targets, so it is understandable as to why they will not want to part ways with an important player like Livramento anytime soon.

With that said, a move to the Etihad Stadium will obviously appeal to the 22-year-old due to Man City’s status and spending power, and he would surely become Guardiola’s starting right-back if he was to join them this summer.

He will also be aware of the World Cup next year and will be wanting to boost his own chances of being Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice in that position, and joining City would definitely help his cause as he competes against the likes of Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold to start in the USA.
