Harvey Elliott could join a vaunted list of England stars to switch from the England top division to Germany as RB Leipzig close in on a transfer.

According to transfer specialist Fabirizo Romano (6 July), the Bundesliga giants have opened talks with the 22-year-old over personal terms as a priority to replace Chelsea-linked playmaker Xavi Simons.

The Liverpool academy graduate is desperate for more first-team minutes, which does not appear possible under Arne Slot, and he could instead seek salvation in the Bundesliga ahead of next season.

Elliott was one of the standout performers at U21 Euro this summer, notching five goals in six starts as the Three Lions lifted the trophy in Slovakia, with multiple teams emerging for his signature.

It is becoming more and more normal for young English players to look abroad for valuable minutes on the pitch, either on loan or permanently, and it appears that Elliott could be next.

Now, Football Insider has taken a look at some of the most decorated Englishmen to have played in Germany.

While his career at Man United has taken a nosedive, Jadon Sancho’s move to Old Trafford only materialised due to his standout performances in the Bundesliga.

During his four permanent years in Germany, the winger notched 50 goals and 57 assists in 137 appearances before returning to Signal Iduna Park during the 2023/24 season.

He became a much-loved figure among the supporters of the German giants and would likely be welcomed back with open arms if he were to return from England again.

Now a rising superstar at Real Madrid and the base of England’s midfield, Jude Bellingham continues to make a name for himself in the world of football, but his development truly began in Germany.

Of course, Birmingham City will take credit for his talent and ability, but with 24 goals and 23 assists in three campaigns with Borussia Dortmund, he came on leaps and bounds at Signal Iduna Park.

Elliott would love to follow in the 22-year-old’s footsteps, and if the current Liverpool gem can seal a move to Leipzig, there is no reason why he cannot have a similar trajectory with his career.

Kevin Keegan made quite the impact during his 90 Bundesliga appearances, having moved from Anfield to Hamburg SV in 1977.

He helped the side lift the league title, reach a European Cup final, and even earned two Ballon d’Ors while playing in Germany, clearly being the right decision for the forward’s career all those years ago.

Most players dream of winning the Ballon d’Or, with Lionel Messi boasting eight of the trophies during his time in football, and that achievement likely would not have been possible for Keegan had he remained in England.

Born in Canada, qualifying for England through his father, Hargreaves is one of the finest examples of an Englishman thriving in a different country, going on to make 145 Bundesliga appearances with Bayern Munich.

Over a seven-year period, the midfielder, known for his time at Man United, won four league titles, three DFB Pokals, one Champions League title, and the Intercontinental Cup in 2001.

He became a true example of what could be achieved by an English player ambitious enough to leave the country in search of a new challenge, and that only leaves one name in the list.

There is very little to say that hasn’t already been said about Harry Kane‘s legendary status, not only as a Tottenham player, but also on the international stage with the Three Lions.

He leads England‘s all-time goalscoring list, netting 73 times in 107 matches, and the 32-year-old is now ripping up the Bundesliga, scaring defenders with his very presence since departing from North London.

In just two seasons with the German giants, Kane has racked up 85 goals in 96 appearances, with 19 of those coming in the Champions League, with another 24 assists added to that tally.

The Bundesliga has become a breeding ground for English talent, and should Elliott also make the move out there, Liverpool fans should not be surprised to see him flourish under Ole Werner.
