Members of the Tottenham hierarchy are wary that they could suffer yet another humiliating transfer defeat this summer over signing Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers.

Spurs have tried and failed to sign a number of high-profile players so far this summer, with less than a week of the window now left as the club scramble to bolster Thomas Frank’s squad.

Morgan Gibbs-White chose not to join Tottenham last month, as he instead signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest despite the North London outfit moving to activate his release clause.

Tottenham advanced on a deal to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace last week, but their move was hijacked by their arch-rivals and Eze officially signed for Arsenal on Saturday (23 August).

They need to fill the void left by James Maddison after he recently suffered a cruciate ligament rupture, and Aston Villa star Rogers has been linked to Tottenham, but a move may be snubbed as the club’s higher-ups try to save face during a tough summer window.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (25 August) that Tottenham are readying a move to sign Rogers, and they have held preliminary discussions over a deal with Aston Villa.

A new report from the Independent (27 August) states that, Spurs “would love” to sign Rogers but some figures in the club’s hierarchy are “wary” of getting into another high-profile transfer chase that could end up being unsuccessful.

The Villans are reportedly not even entertaining the idea of selling the 23-year-old forward, and there is a belief that Tottenham will be unable to offer a big enough bid to change that stance.

Football Insider verdict

Rogers only joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough for an initial £8million [BBC] in February last year, but his rise to stardom since then has been a notable one, and he is now a full England international.

The 22-year-old winger has established himself as one of Unai Emery’s key players, and it would be a massive blow for them to lose him this late in the window.

With that said, Spurs will surely possess the financial might and pulling power to secure a deal for him regardless, and if they are serious about backing Frank and becoming a force in the Premier League under him, they must get it done.

The Independent’s report states that West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman and Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche are all being looked at as other options, and while they are all good players, Rogers is either better or a more realistic signing than all of them.

Villa will have their price, like all clubs do, and unless it is completely extortionate to the point where Spurs would feel embarrassed paying it, they need to progress with a deal to sign the England international.
