Tottenham could make an approach to sign summer target Harvey Elliott from Liverpool after they suffered a new blow regarding James Maddison in a pre-season friendly.

Spurs‘ new era under Thomas Frank is now officially underway, and the Danish boss has been looking to add fresh impetus into the squad he has inherited ahead of his maiden campaign in charge.

Tottenham have focused on attacking arrivals by signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham and Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, but they have missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White after he signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest.

Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 15 July that Tottenham had joined the race to sign Elliott from Liverpool alongside Newcastle this summer, after he had also revealed to Football Insider that Brighton are targeting Elliott with a move away from Anfield possible soon.

The North London outfit are set to lose club legend Heung-min Son ahead of the new campaign, and now Maddison could be ruled out for a long time after only just returning from a serious injury, and so should further their pursuit of Elliott with an official approach for his services as soon as possible.

Maddison missed Spurs’ Europa League triumph in May with a knee injury, and he finally made his return to action against Arsenal on Thursday (31 July), and started on the bench in their pre-season friendly against Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday (3 August)

The 28-year-old entered the pitch as a substitute for Archie Gray in the 75th minute, but it was a very short cameo against the Magpies as he pulled up writhing in pain with eight minutes of normal time left after seemingly turning sharply but making no contact with a Newcastle player.

He looked to be holding the same knee that saw him miss three months of action between April and July, and Spurs boss Frank admitted after the game that the injury looked “brutal,” and confirmed that it was a reoccurrence of his previous problem.

Football London’s Spurs correspondent, Alasdair Gold, later posted a picture of the England international leaving the Seoul World Cup Stadium on crutches on X, saying he seemed “devastated,” so it looks as if he could be ruled out for the long-term yet again in a cruel blow to the club’s pre-season preparations.

Maddison was a catalyst for Spurs’ Europa League success last term, with three goals and four assists in 11 games, and he also notched nine goals and seven assists in 31 league outings despite the club’s poor domestic performances under Ange Postecoglou.

Now that he could be facing more time on the sidelines after his recent knee troubles, Tottenham could well need to delve into the transfer market to find a suitable replacement, with midfield additions needed regardless after they missed out on Gibbs-White.

They already hold an interest in Elliott, as revealed to Football Insider by former scout Brown, and it would make a lot of sense to go for him now that his compatriot could be facing another extended spell in the sidelines.

He featured just 28 times in all competitions last season as Arne Slot chose to stick by his more senior players, and his minutes seem unlikely to increase much further in the new campaign after Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

West Ham have also been linked with a move for Elliott this summer, but according to the Mail (30 July), the East London side are “a long way off” matching the Reds’ valuation of his services.

Spurs will have more money to spend than their capital rivals, and signing a player with the potential and quality of Elliott to, firstly replace Maddison in the team, and then compete with him and other midfielders and forwards for a place in Frank’s starting eleven, seems like a no-brainer right now.
