Tottenham told new Jean-Philippe Mateta price tag after rejected bid - 'he could end up going'

Thu 11 September 2025 13:04, UK

Tottenham have been told the updated price tag of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta after their interest in the summer.

Spurs made a £40million enquiry for the French centre forward, which was promptly rejected by the Eagles.

Now, Football Insider have revealed that Crystal Palace are not willing to sell Mateta in the January window, as he is such a vital part of Oliver Glasner’s side.

However, Thomas Frank’s side may still come back in for the 28-year-old in the new year, or at the end of the season.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Spurs will have to pay a much higher fee than the £40m they offered before to sign Mateta.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Mateta is worth more than £40m, as the price for goalscorers at the moment is very high.

The Frenchman has scored 30 goals across the last two Premier League seasons and has already opened his account for this campaign, finding the net in Crystal Palace’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Wyness added that Mateta could still end up going at some stage, despite his higher valuation.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “He’s one of the stars that they couldn’t let go.

“He may end up going at some stage, but he’s going to be at a higher valuation.

He’s a quality player and I think he’s going to have a good season, so we’ll see how that plays into it as well.

“But Palace, Glasner’s trying to build, and obviously Mateta likes Glasner, responds well to his management.

The key to this is going to be where Glasner is going to be going forward as well.

“I think they’re managing to at least keep hold of the semblance of most of the squad, that they did quite well with.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool risk losing out to Real Madrid or Juventus for Marc Guehi’s signature after their failed attempt to sign the defender, sources have told Football Insider.

Guehi remains a Crystal Palace player after his deadline day move to Anfield collapsed at the eleventh hour, with Oliver Glasner personally intervening to prevent his captain leaving without a replacement.

Sources say that Real Madrid and Juventus are both fond of the England international and could launch their own bids to sign him on a free transfer.

The pair have a strong track record when it comes to picking up free agents, with Liverpool worried that this may mean they miss out on Guehi.
