Tottenham Hotspur remain in the market for a creative midfielder after losing James Maddison to injury, and their main target may now have been clarified.
The Lilywhites are preparing for life back in the Champions League under new boss Thomas Frank, who takes over following Ange Postecoglou’s removal — with a Europa League title not enough to outweigh a 17th-place Premier League finish for the Australian.
But Frank’s plans took a major hit recently as Maddison was stretchered off just 12 minutes into a 1-1 friendly draw with Newcastle in Seoul.
It has since been confirmed that the 28-year-old will miss the majority of the upcoming season with an ACL tear.
Jack Grealish has been touted as one possible replacement for Maddison, with the 29-year-old looking for a way out of the Etihad Stadium after falling down the pecking order.
Grealish clocked up just 715 minutes of Premier League action last season, with only seven of his 20 appearances in the competition coming from the start.

But the 39-time England international’s quality has never been in question, with Tottenham, West Ham, Newcastle and Everton all among the clubs understood to be lining up for his signature this summer.

Unfortunately for Spurs, it’s the latter who appears to be pushing ahead in the race, with Fabrizio Romano reporting on Sunday (10 August) that Everton are ‘advancing’ in their talks for Grealish and that the player has ‘opened the doors’ to a move.
While Grealish would have been a prime candidate to cover for Maddison at Spurs, he will likely be tasked with playing on the wing at Everton, who currently have Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye as their only senior options on the flanks.

With the prospect of signing Grealish slipping away, Spurs must now turn their attention to getting a deal for Harvey Elliott over the line.
The 22-year-old is an incredibly exciting talent and scored five goals in six appearances to fire England to U-21 Euros glory this summer — winning the Player of the Tournament award in the process.
However, Elliott has struggled to get a regular look-in at Anfield, managing just two starts and 360 minutes in the Premier League last season.
Even so, the former Fulham youngster still notched five goals and three assists in 28 appearances across all competitions in 2024/25 and would surely provide incredible quality to the right club.
Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke recently revealed that Liverpool will accept bids of £40million for Elliott this summer.
The likes of RB Leipzig, Napoli and West Ham have also been linked with Elliott, who is not short of admirers.
But Spurs’ need is arguably greatest after losing Maddison to injury — after all, even Leipzig will find it easier to replace Xavi Simons, who will command a sizeable fee from Chelsea.
Elliott feels like an obvious choice for Spurs, who must now act swiftly with the start of the Premier League season less than a week away.
