Tottenham have considered making a move to sign Man United star Kobbie Mainoo amid ongoing uncertainty about his long-term future.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that talk about the 20-year-old’s future seems to have gone quiet despite the speculation earlier in the window.

The England international turned down the offer of a new contract at Old Trafford in March and was expected to explore his options this summer.

However, former chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Mainoo looks set to remain at Man United for the upcoming season despite the initial expectation that he would leave.

Tottenham and London rivals Chelsea have both been linked with moves for the midfielder this summer, but any late deal is considered unlikely as things stand.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider on 31 July that Mainoo is happy to remain at Man United for the upcoming season following the club’s U-turn.

This article contains exclusive comment from Paul Robinson, a football pundit and former England, Tottenham and Leeds goalkeeper.

Brown told Football Insider in March that Man United will accept £70million bids for Mainoo as they plan to raise significant funds from his sale.

However, the lack of interest this summer has led to suggestions that all parties are prepared to move on with the midfielder a key part of Ruben Amorim’s plans.

Robinson explained that while Tottenham had been interested in a deal, the word coming out of the players camp is that he’s focused on United.

“The Kobbie Mainoo situation has gone extremely quiet,” he told Football Insider.

“He played 25 Premier League games last season and was a big part of Ruben Amorim’s plans, and he’s been away with the team in pre-season.

“The words coming out from the Kobbie Mainoo camp are that all focus is on Man United.

“So I wouldn’t be surprised if he was there for another season.

“There’s no word of a new contract coming out for him, there’s been no word that he’s in talks for a new deal, and there’s no word that he’s in talks over a move.

“There’s been muted interest from Tottenham, another club that have been linked with him.

“He’s a top-quality young player, but at the moment all is extremely quiet.”

Heading into the final month of the transfer window, Tottenham still have plans to back Thomas Frank and retain an interest in Celtic’s Daizen Maeda.

However, Brown told Football Insider on 31 July that Brentford have leapfrogged Tottenham in the Maeda race after talks over a new deal at Celtic stalled.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 28 July that Maeda has had his head turned by Premier League interest and is unwilling to commit to a new deal.

While he is happy to remain at Parkhead and will not force a move away, he is planning to assess any offers that come in before making a decision about his future.
