Newcastle United have joined Aston Villa in the race to sign Porto striker Samu Omorodion in the closing stages of the transfer window.
That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Eddie Howe is pushing to sign a replacement for Alexander Isak.
The Magpies’ scouts have been keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old’s progress both domestically and in European competition and feel he would be an strong option.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 13 August that Newcastle plan to submit a bid for Samu and are ready to firm up their interest in the Spain international.

However, with Villa also strongly interested in the move, they will yet again face competition in their efforts to sign one of their top attacking targets.
Brown told Football Insider on 5 August that Aston Villa want to sign Samu and will use Unai Emery and Monchi’s connections in Spain to step up negotiations.
Brown first told Football Insider in June that Newcastle are keeping tabs on Samu’s progress and have been weighing up a potential offer to improve their options.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that the Spaniard has now become a key target late in the window.
“Everybody knows Newcastle need a new striker,” he told Football Insider.
“They’ve had a few players on that list, but they’re working down that list now.
“Their real top targets, the players like Joao Pedro, Ekitike and Sesko, all chose to go elsewhere so they’ve had to look at other options.

“But their scouts have been looking at Samu from Porto.
“He wasn’t their first choice, but he’s somebody they’ve been aware of for a while and have been watching so they’ll know what he can do.
“They know the situation they’re in, they might be losing Isak, and they will have plans in place for if that happens even at this stage.
“I don’t think they’re the only ones interested, which might be a concern given how their window has gone, but it’s a possibility they want to explore.”
Samu is not the only forward Newcastle have been looking at this summer, as Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson remains very much on their list of targets.
Football Insider revealed on 12 August that Newcastle have joined the race for Jackson alongside four other clubs across Europe late in the transfer window.

Aston Villa also hold an interest in the Senegal international, alongside Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Juventus, as the Blues hope to spark a bidding war.
However, Chelsea are believed to be demanding £80million to sell the Senegal international this summer, which would price most sides out of a move.
