Trent Alexander-Arnold has offered a fitness update after being substituted prematurely in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Atalanta on Thursday night.

The Reds fell to a 3-1 aggregate loss to the Serie A outfit in the Europa League quarter-finals, despite an encouraging start in Bergamo as Mohamed Salah scored a seventh minute penalty - won by Alexander-Arnold.

Making only his eighth appearance of 2024, the 25-year-old was handed his first start since mid-February in Italy, and only his third start since early-January, after being sidelined by a long-term knee injury.

He made his comeback as a substitute against Crystal Palace on Sunday after Conor Bradley was forced off with an ankle injury, with Jurgen Klopp later suggesting Liverpool would have to manage the returning Alexander-Arnold’s minutes.

Impressing during the first half against Atalanta, Alexander-Arnold was replaced by Joe Gomez in the 72nd minute as the Reds were left unable to overturn the Italians’ three-goal advantage.

And the right-back has confirmed that his early withdrawal was not injury-related, rather he was feeling the effects after making his first start after a lengthy lay-off.

“I think I just ran out of juice in the second half,” he admitted.

“In the first half I was enjoying my football, I was finding passes and playing a game that I loved.

“And I think you can tell by the way I played it was special for me to be back out there and help the team win the game.

“[But] as good as it was for me personally to be back out there and starting, the overriding feeling is disappointment not to be continuing in this competition.”

Although disappointed to exit the Europa League, Alexander-Arnold is determined for Liverpool to bounce back quickly and breathe new life into their Premier League title-charge.

“After the game we spoke quite positively about the rest of the season, we’ve got a month left and we need to give it everything,” Alexander-Arnold told the club website.

“That’s what we are going to do, we are going to throw everything at it and try to do all that we can.

We know it’s not in our hands anymore but we need to be as good as possible and just be in the best position that we can to capitalise if teams do slip up.

“We have got a huge game that we need to go and win [on Sunday].

We have got a very difficult week ahead of us, three away games that we need to win and get results in and that’s our aim now.

“That’s why on nights like this you need to learn from it quick and settle the dust as quick as possible tonight, get back home and recover and go again on Sunday.”
