Sunday’s game at Anfield will be more than just another match.
It’s the final game of the Premier League season, and Liverpool have already wrapped up the title.
It should be all smiles.
But for the squad, there’s a bittersweet note.
One of their own is leaving.
Not just any player—but a local lad who came through the academy, became vice-captain, and helped deliver silverware to the club.
It’s always tough when a player who’s been around for years says goodbye.
Especially when it feels like it’s happening quietly.
That makes it even more personal for those closest to him—his teammates.
So, instead of waiting, the Liverpool squad took matters into their own hands.
On the eve of Liverpool’s final game of the season against Crystal Palace—where the Premier League trophy will be lifted—the squad held a private farewell ceremony at the AXA Training Centre.
Led by captain Virgil van Dijk, the players gathered before training to honour Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to leave the club after 20 years.
Van Dijk addressed the group, “Right, Trent, we all knew this day was coming, of course, and I speak for everyone here.
We would like to thank you for everything you have done.”
He continued, “Obviously in your time with Liverpool, the success that we had, the good moments together on and off the pitch, we are definitely going to miss you.”
“You’re an outstanding player, a very good human being.”
“We wish you well and yeah, listen, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you have done.”
“All the best?
We have a little something for you.”
The players applauded and handed him a framed ‘Alexander-Arnold 66’ shirt.
Clearly caught off guard, Trent responded, “I’m just eternally grateful for everything that I’ve been given.”
“We all dream of these moments but, for me, it feels even more special because I’ve been here 20 years.”
“It’s an amazing chapter of my life – it’s been my whole life – it’s been everything I’ve ever worked for – dreamt for.”
“To share it with you guys and create these bonds, a lot of the lads, especially these guys here [points to VVD and Alisson], have seen me transition from a boy to a man.”
“The bonds and the brotherhood I’ve got with you guys will remain with me forever.”
“I’ve got stories and memories I’ll be able to tell kids and grandkids.”
“I wasn’t prepared for this, but I appreciate it, I appreciate all of you for everything.”
The squad ended the moment by posing for a group photo with Trent holding his framed shirt.
It wasn’t a public farewell—but it was one that mattered.
