Trent Alexander-Arnold said that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season in order to experience a new challenge.
The right-back, who joined Liverpool's academy as a young boy in 2004, confirmed his impending departure in a statement on Monday.
Alexander-Arnold's future has been a hot topic throughout the season, and it has finally been clarified that he will not be a Liverpool player next term.
In a statement issued on social media, the 26-year-old explained his reasons for leaving, saying: "I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally."
Alexander-Arnold was one of three key players whose contracts were due to expire at the end of this season, but the England right-back is the only one who is leaving the club as a free agent, after Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah committed to new deals at Anfield last month.
Alexander-Arnold has faced criticism for not addressing his future sooner, and he told club media why he believes now is the right time to reveal his plans.
He said: "I know a lot of people will say I should have said sooner, a lot of people will say maybe I waited for the right time.
"When we were in a title race and trying to push for trophies, it’s about making the right decision for the team and trying not to distract the team and take away from what we’re doing on the pitch.
For me, it was always to do it after the season was kind of done; not so much the final game but when there was nothing else really to play for.
"Now that we’ve won the league and we’ve been able to celebrate it and celebrate such an amazing achievement, I felt like now is the right time to get it off my chest and tell the fans the truth, and now is that time."
