Liverpool fans could be heard booing the right-back when he came off the bench in a recent clash against Arsenal, with others having labelled his behaviour at the trophy parade, where Alexander-Arnold appeared to be in tears, as ‘playing up for the cameras’.
The animosity looks set to continue even after Alexander-Arnold’s exit, with a social media comment from the English international having caused outrage.
It came after the official Real Madrid Instagram account shared a picture of Alexander-Arnold and new boss Xabi Alonso from Liverpool’s clash with Bayer Leverkusen earlier this season.
Underneath the post, a reply from Alexander-Arnold’s official profile read: “El Jefe,” which translates from Spanish to “the boss”.
The response raised eyebrows and was a source of frustration for Liverpool fans, who are just coming to terms with their local hero having moved on to pastures new.
By contrast, it didn’t take the club long to move on, given the Premier League champions have already wrapped up signing number one of the summer window, penning a move for Jeremie Frimpong.
It was confirmed on Friday that Liverpool had triggered Frimpong’s £29.5m release clause, allowing the wingback to make the move from Bayer Leverkusen.
For me, playing against Liverpool when I was in Leverkusen, really difficult.
Obviously Leverkusen were still good but you can see that Liverpool is next level.”
