Trent Alexander-Arnold faces an uphill battle to make England's World Cup squad - he may never get back into the starting XI.

That is according to talkSPORT's Adrian Durham after Reece James' impressive performances against Andorra and Serbia.

The Chelsea captain has established himself in Thomas Tuchel's side since he became Three Lions boss in January.

James has featured in all five of England's qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, starting each of the last four.

His run of displays continued this month, whilst Alexander-Arnold was left out of the squad entirely.

It means the Real Madrid full-back has now played just one match for his country since October last year.

Durham believes that trend could continue unless James picks up and injury or Alexander-Arnold raises his game in the Spanish capital.

Assessing James' form for the national team, he told Hawksbee & Jacobs: "He's so good when he's fit and we're just hoping he stays fit because this could be the end of Trent Alexander-Arnold's international career.

"When you think about it, Reece James stays fit, does Trent get back in?

Probably not, as good as he is.

"He's got to have a real good run at Real Madrid and produce at Real Madrid to even get back in the England squad.

"So Reece James staying fit is crucial for England to operate at full pelt in that right-back position.

I think he's been excellent in this camp."

James played a key role in the victories over Andorra and Serbia as Tuchel's side moved within touching distance of a place at the World Cup.

They have won all five matches so far during the campaign without conceding to extend their run of clean sheets in competitive fixtures to a record-equalling seven.

As for the Blues defender, who made 74 appearances for the club under Tuchel, he is now the Three Lions' first-choice at right-back.

His two caps this month have taken his tally to 21 since making his debut under Gareth Southgate in 2020.

However, James has so far only featured at one major international tournament, the delayed Euros a year after his debut.

The 25-year-old's injury woes saw him miss both the 2022 World Cup as well as last summer's Euros in Germany.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold is a veteran of the last two World Cups as well as Euro 2024.

In contrast, though, he missed Euro 2020 through injury as James played once during England's run to the final.

The former Liverpool man will be hoping to force his way into Tuchel's plans ahead of next month's friendly against Wales.

England also continue their qualifying campaign away to Latvia, where a win could see them reach next summer's finals.

They ended this month's international break eight points clear at the top of the group.
