Sunday should have been another day of extreme celebration for Liverpool supporters.

Having seen their team romp to the Premier League title two weeks before, they were set to rub it in the faces of their nearest challengers on a sunny day at Anfield.

And while Liverpool supporters created a party atmosphere for two thirds of the game against Arsenal, things turned sour when Trent Alexander-Arnold emerged with 23 minutes left to play.

The negative reaction to Alexander-Arnold has been slammed by former Liverpool players such as Steve Nicol, but after seeing the local lad come good and then decide to leave them for nothing, many will feel it was justified.

As for Alexander-Arnold himself, well, the 26-year-old appeared to understand and accept the anger being directed his way.

To his credit, Alexander-Arnold’s reaction spoke of a player who knows he has completely let down those who have stuck by him the most.

Many of those lamenting Liverpool fans for booing Alexander-Arnold have little to no understanding of the situation.

Supporters are not angry at the Scouser for leaving, necessarily, it is more the manner in which Alexander-Arnold has handled his departure which has riled people up.

The sight of the Liverpool academy graduate solemnly applauding Anfield at the final whistle on Sunday was proof that he himself is fully aware of this.

As per The Athletic, Alexander-Arnold looked ‘shell shocked’ by the reaction to his entrance onto the pitch but applauded all four sides of the stadium at the end nonetheless.

It would have been easy for Alexander-Arnold to react to the crowd on the pitch during the game, or simply disappear down the tunnel at full-time.

That he didn’t is worthy of some small praise, but it also shows that he feels – at least in some small part – that he knows the criticism from those who have loved him unconditionally is completely justified.

Alexander-Arnold does care, and that’s why he hung around to show it after the game.

It is likely that Alexander-Arnold was taken aback by the strength of bad feeling towards him at Anfield on Sunday.

He knows full well that he has let a lot of supporters down.

So, instead of Sunday changing his view of the fans solely into a bad one, we think Alexander-Arnold will now be more appreciative than ever of the support he has always received from his own supporters.

He now knows how it feels to be on the wrong end of them.

Having spent the past decade earning nothing but praise from the Liverpool fans, he has now crossed the Rubicon.

Once that pendulum swings the wrong way, it is nearly impossible to bring it back.

By the look on Alexander-Arnold’s face at full-time on Sunday, he knows he has taken himself to the point of no return.
