The Reds’ title defence has technically got off to the perfect start after picking up the maximum of 12 points, but they probably do not deserve to have that many.

They might be top of the Premier League yet again, but Liverpool have needed last-gasp winners in all of their games so far to clinch the victory.

Some will say it is the sign of champions, others will say it is just pure luck, but either way they have got the job done.

However, individual performances might be a slight concern for many fans, with some players simply not looking like themselves out on the pitch.

And, Troy Deeney had some pretty harsh words to say about one star in particular, with the former Watford man labelling him as ‘clunky’.

Liverpool’s attack has perhaps not been as free-flowing as many would have imagined given the money they have spent this summer, with a key reason for this being due to the quietness of Mohamed Salah.

Although the Egyptian still has two goals and one assist in the league this season, by his incredibly high standards, this would be deemed as a poor start.

He has also just been very quiet in games overall and struggled to make an impact, with Deeney believing that the Reds’ star man has looked ‘clunky’ in the games so far.

“Liverpool haven’t been great,” Deeney said on his TikTok account when giving his verdict on Liverpool’s dramatic start to the season.

“I know Salah scored and Liverpool fans will jump down my throat, but he’s not playing well, he’s not flying at this moment in time.

He seems a little clunky up top.”

Against Burnley, the 33-year-old was very quiet, but as he always does, he turned up for the big occasion and won Liverpool the game with a 95th minute penalty.

Reds fans will not mind too much if he keeps up this knack of showing up when he is needed most, but Deeney is right to some extent and there is no denying that he has not been himself at the start of the new campaign.

Granted, Salah might not be having the best of times right now, but anyone who writes him off will very likely be proven wrong.

There is a reason that he is often labelled as ‘outstanding’ because that is exactly what he is, with his inevitability something that both supporters and rival fans have come to terms with since he arrived in 2017.

He has also had quiet patches in the past but has always come out the other side, sometimes even better too, meaning that he just needs to be given more time.

With the Champions League returning, it would be no surprise to see this being where Salah really kicks into gear, with the Egyptian truly being the man for the big occasions.
