Confusion surrounded Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak on Friday as Newcastle gave their opening offer very short shrift.
The Reds had been building up to a big bid for Isak over the past couple of weeks, with the offer finally hitting Newcastle desks on Friday afternoon.
But it was soon sent back with interest, or rather, no interest from Tyneside.
The message from St James’ Park is still clear enough: Isak is going to cost at least £150m.
As Rousing The Kop revealed on Friday, Liverpool will not meet Isak’s hefty asking price.
But they are prepared to hang around a little longer.
Rumours from around the football world suggested that Liverpool could call it a day in the chase for the Swede after just one bid.
But speaking out to set the current scene on the saga, journalist Fabrizio Romano says the Reds have sent a ‘clear message’ to Isak instead.

There was some potentially positive news for Liverpool supporters on Friday night as claims that Benjamin Sesko has chosen to join Newcastle surfaced.
According to Romano, the Toon finding a suitable replacement is ‘the only way’ Isak to Liverpool can still be a possibility.

“Internally, Liverpool know that this is part of the game,” the transfer expert told his YouTube channel.
“It’s still the beginning of August, there’s still plenty of time to go before the end of the transfer window.
“Liverpool expected Newcastle to be strong on their position, especially because of one reason: The only way for the Isak deal to happen this summer is if Newcastle find a top striker on the market and decide internally to let Isak go.
“Isak is exposing himself in an important way, not training, not travelling with the squad, and Liverpool wanted to show to the player, ‘we are really ready’.
They sent a clear message to Alexander Isak: ‘we are here, we are ready, we have the money, we are prepared to make something important happen.'”
Worry might be starting to creep in for Liverpool supporters that they will ultimately end up without their top striker target this summer.
It has been claimed that Isak is likely to return to Newcastle on Monday where Eddie Howe could sit him down and win him back over.
But according to Romano, the 25-year-old’s position remains unchanged from recent weeks: he wants to join Liverpool.
“Newcastle said no [to Liverpool’s offer], but Isak remains on his position: no intention to sign a new contract despite being offered that, and intention to go to Liverpool,” he says.
“Let’s follow the next steps because it is not over, trust me.
