A young Liverpool side dominated against Athletic Bilbao during the first of a double-header at Anfield on Monday.

Fresh off the back of their tour of Asia, the Reds are back on Merseyside and stepping up preparations for the new season.

Ahead of the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, Arne Slot ensured his full Liverpool squad – or at least those who were available – got a run out at Anfield.

The first of the two matches was reserved for the more fringe players, as Slot clearly showed who he currently sees as his back-ups heading into the season.

For a youngster like Trey Nyoni, that is no problem.

Still just 18, the midfielder is still feeling his way into senior football with Liverpool.

Unfortunately, though, Nyoni appeared to pick up a slightly worrying knock during his outing against Athletic.

Having adopted a lower squad number this summer, Nyoni looks set for a bigger role in 2025/26.

The former Leicester City prospect is a favourite of Slot’s, and made five appearances for the first-team last term.

That number looks likely to be significantly larger this time around, but as per journalist Ian Doyle, on X, the teenager looked to pick up a problem during the second half of Monday’s match.

“Nyoni looked like he had tweaked a hamstring moments earlier,” Doyle reported.

Slot subsequently took Nyoni off with 23 minutes left to play.

Hopefully nothing serious with the Community Shield on the horizon.

As well as Nyoni, there were a couple more new injury issues for Liverpool on Monday.

Virgil van Dijk missed the day through illness, while Conor Bradley was ruled out having picked up yet another fitness problem.

Asked by Liverpoolfc.com whether either would be struggling to make the game on Sunday, Slot gave a mixed answer.

“Virgil normally not,” he replied.

Alisson will be back in time as well.”

Fingers crossed no new issues develop during Monday evening’s match.
