Liverpool look to have missed out on one of their summer transfer targets in the closing moments of the window.
The Reds have been busy all summer trying to get plenty of deals over the line, ahead of their Premier League title defence.
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi had emerged as a top target, earlier on this summer, with Liverpool looking to strengthen up the centre-back department even after the arrival of Giovanni Leoni from Parma.
A £35million deal had been agreed between the Reds and Palace for Guehi, with the England international expected to complete a move to Anfield.
However, the deal fell through at the eleventh hour after Palace failed to sign a replacement for Guehi before the deadline.

As a result, Liverpool will go into the first half of the season with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Leoni as their senior centre-back options.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will return for a move for Guehi in the future, with the England international out of contract next summer.
If the Reds are desperate to sign a new central defender, they have the option of turning to the free agent market.
Many players are still without clubs after leaving their previous employers earlier in the summer.
In that sense, there are some potential options available.
Takehiro Tomiyasu is available as a free agent following his exit from Arsenal earlier on this summer; the defender made just one appearance for the Gunners last season due to a knee injury and underwent surgery on the issue in February and has been recovering ever since.
Kurt Zouma is also a free agent following his exit from West Ham this summer.
Zouma made 20 appearances during a loan spell with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Orobah last season, while he last played a Premier League fixture in May last year.
