Tyler Morton is regarded as one of Liverpool’s most promising talents.

He joined the Liverpool Academy at just seven years old and has since progressed through the ranks to secure opportunities with the senior team.

The defensive midfielder has made two appearances for the Reds and has been loaned out to Championship teams twice.

Last season, he was a key player for Blackburn Rovers, appearing in 40 matches and becoming an integral part of the squad.

This season, the England Under-20 international got another full Championship season under his belt with Hull City.

The Liverpool midfielder was instrumental in Hull City’s campaign, and until the final day of the Championship season this past weekend, the Tigers were contenders for a promotion play-off spot.

Nonetheless, Hull City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, a team battling to avoid relegation.

This loss, combined with West Brom’s 3-0 victory over Preston North End, left the Tigers in 7th place, just shy of securing a spot in the Championship play-offs.

Hull’s manager Liam Rosenior has praised him as an ‘outstanding player.’

Under Rosenior’s guidance, Morton played 41 times this season, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

And now returning to Liverpool ahead of what could be a massive 2024/25 preseason, Morton has reflected on his loan in the Championship.

What did Tyler Morton say about his loan spell with Hull City?

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, the England U21 international revealed that first-team football in the Championship is ‘like a different sport’ compared to academy football:

“It takes time to get used to it, coming from academy football straight to the Championship,” Morton began.

“It’s like a whole different sport in my opinion.”

“You’re playing against players who will smash you off the ball, you don’t get that in academy football!”

“But it’s developed my game massively and puts you in a good stead for what you want in the future.”

Of his move to Hull, he added that his move to the club was very rushed – which was not ideal for him:

“It happened quite late, so it was hard because you don’t know if you’re here or there until the last minute.”

“It’s tough not only for us but for our families too, but it’s football and that’s what we signed up for.”

“We got told last minute and suddenly we’re driving to Hull – I’ve never been to Hull in my life – and I’m wondering where I’m going to stay.”

“But that’s part of it and that’s why we love being footballers.”

Finally, he also highlighted how experience in the Championship is very good for a midfielder in his position:

“There is a lot of experience, especially, in that midfield area,” Morton explained.

“I feel like a lot of the players I come up against are proper professionals and people who have played for years and years in the Championship and the Premier League, so you have to be a bit smarter.”

“Especially being not the biggest and not the strongest, I have to use my brain a bit more to be quicker and cleverer than my opponent.”

“It’s understanding timing, really, and using your body, stuff like that.”
