Tyler Morton completed his permanent move to Olympique Lyon on Tuesday, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract that will keep him at the Groupama Stadium until 2030, with an option for a sixth season.

Lyon agreed to pay Liverpool an initial fee of €15 million, rising to €18 million with performance-related add-ons.

The midfield prospect departs Anfield after 14 years in the academy, having joined aged seven and made four senior appearances under Jürgen Klopp.

He was a member of England’s Under-21 squad that won the European Championship this summer, having accumulated 13 caps for the U-21s.

It was no surprise that Morton decided to move on this summer having seen precious little game time this past season, only make five appearances.

His situation was further complicated by a shoulder injury sustained in December against Southampton.

That setback required surgery in February, ruling him out for several months and effectively ending his campaign.

The interruption not only hampered his hopes of gaining momentum in the senior side but also restricted any chance of making an impact in the latter half of the season.

But with his transfer officially confirmed, the u21 England international has penned a lengthy and emotional letter to say goodbye to everyone associated with Liverpool FC:

“When you spend 17 years at a club , the fans , players and staff feel like family to you.

It’s more than just football,” he began

“I could sit here all day and talk about the memories I experienced throughout my time at Liverpool but I just want to express how grateful I am to this club!”

“The people around this club have taught me so much and completely shaped me into the person I am today.”

“First of all, to the staff, players and all my teammates I have worked with, you have been people I will remember for life,” Morton wrote.

“In my hardest times they were always there for me and at my best times they never changed.”

“To the staff I’m forever grateful for the opportunity you have all given me to play for this club, from the age of 5 until now all the staff I have come across have guided me and allowed me to be the player I am today and the work they put in behind the scenes at all ages should never go unnoticed.”

The new Lyon man also reserved some time to thank Liverpool fans:

“Finally to the Liverpool fans , thank you for looking after me and my family always.

“If I was on loan or at the club I always felt loved and apart of this incredible football club.”

“You backed me through anything and I hope you know I gave it my all for you because that is the least you deserve !”

“A lot of change in 17 years , but one thing that will never change is my love for the club?

I will always be a Liverpool fan”

“You’ll never walk alone.”
