The football world is in mourning today after Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva tragically lost their lives in a road accident in the early hours of Thursday morning.

To honour his memory, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) had formally requested that UEFA hold a minute’s silence before Portugal’s opening UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 match against Spain in Bern this Thursday evening.

The tribute will not only precede the Group B encounter but is also planned for all Women’s Euro matches taking place on Thursday and Friday.

In addition, Portugal’s women players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the fallen star and his brother.

UEFA have since granted the request, penning a statement on X:

“On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward, along with his brother Andre Silva.

“Our thoughts are with their family, friends, teammates and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.

“A moment of silence will be observed at all of todays and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away today.”

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin added:

“Just three weeks ago, I had the honour of presenting Diogo Jota with a medal after the UEFA Nations League final – a moment of joy, pride, and celebration that will now forever be burned in memory with sorrow.

“His passion, energy and spirit on the field inspired everyone around him.

Rest in peace, dear Diogo?

You will not be forgotten.”

The accident was reportedly caused by a tyre blow-out while Diogo Jota’s vehicle was overtaking on Spain’s A-52 motorway.

This caused the car to veer off the road and ignite shortly after midnight.

Jurgen Klopp was among those to pay tribute to the Liverpool icon.
