UEFA are set to introduce some major changes to the way the UEFA Champions League is played starting from next season.
The 2024/25 season saw major changes to Europe’s premier club cup competition, with the introduction of a new Swiss-style table replacing the old format, which had teams in groups of four in the group stages.
In the new format, the best eight among the 36 participating teams progressed to the knockout round, while the teams that finished in 9th-24th place participated in a playoff that determined the next eight teams that would participate in the tournament.
Liverpool excelled in the first-ever League Phase, finishing at the top of the table after losing just one game.
However, they were narrowly eliminated in the Round of 16 by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, despite winning the first leg in France 1-0.
Ahead of the 2025/26 season, UEFA is set to introduce a new set of rules in the competition.
This is according to French publication RMC Sport, who claim that the Champions League governing body are planning major changes to the tournament one season after it was reformatted.
According to the report, UEFA are ending the use of draws to determine which team plays the second leg at home during the knockout phase.
From next season, this advantage will be earned during the league phase:
So the top two teams in the overall standings at the end of the league phase will benefit from playing the second leg at home in every round, up to the final.
Additionally, the teams ranked 3rd and 4th will host the second leg of the round of 16 and quarter-finals at home.
Teams ranked between 5th and 8th place will play the second leg of the round of 16 at home.
The report also claims that if a club eliminates a top-four team in the round of 16, it will inherit their advantage for the subsequent rounds?

This new system will also apply to the Europa League and the Conference League.
