Rangers could be set to miss out on a huge boost to their transfer kitty with under a week to go before the transfer deadline.

That is the verdict of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the Bears will have to wait until near the end of the window before attempting to sign their priority transfer targets this summer.

Rangers were bought by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises at the end of May, just in time for the transfer window.

Since then, 11 new players have been acquired, including former Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama and Tottenham’s Mikey Moore on loan.

However, results have not been forthcoming under the new boss Russell Martin, and the Bears are still winless in the Premiership.

Most concerningly is the fact that after Rangers’ 3-1 loss against Club Brugge in the first leg, the Gers are now on the verge of missing out on a place in the Champions League next season, and the revenue that comes with it.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider previously, Plumley highlighted the importance of Champions League revenue for Celtic’s transfer business.

Rangers find themselves in the same boat and will require a miraculous performance against the Belgian Pro League side in Bruges to net a windfall that would be vital to their continued squad overhaul.

Plumley explained: “It depends on whether or not they get into the Champions League.

Mikey Moore joined Rangers from Tottenham this summer.

It’s unavoidable; it’s just the financial situation of the league and the context of that competition.

“If Rangers were going into the group stage of the Champions League and all goes well in the final qualifying round, we know that’s going to generate them at least €25-30m (£21.6-26m) in revenue across the course of that group stage.

“That is the difference in terms of having it or not, and that then dictates how much you’re going to spend.”

With their place in the Champions League hanging by a thread and the very real threat of missing out on the revenue that would come without a place in the competition, the Bears may be inclined to sell a key player this summer.

Hamza Igamane is a target for Lille, and Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider exclusively that Martin’s side will accept an offer in the region of £15m for the striker.

Hamza Igamane is expected to leave Rangers this summer.

Mirren on Sunday, 24 August, the forward refused, citing an injury.

Martin has Danilo and Cyriel Dessers as alternative options, but may be keen for Rangers to sign a new forward before the end of the window.
