'Understand': Fabrizio Romano delivers Isak to Liverpool update after £150m man submits transfer request

Liverpool’s summer spending spree continued on Wednesday as Hugo Ekitike signed in as their fourth major signing of the window.

The Reds have been exceptionally busy this year, with FSG unusually loose with the Anfield chequebook.

But if the spending so far has been impressive, then Liverpool could be about to take things to a whole new level.

As they target a new number nine, the feeling has long been that Alexander Isak is the top target for Arne Slot.

And that, initially impossible-seeming dream took a step forward on Thursday after Isak told Newcastle he wants to leave this summer.

With Liverpool immediately put on alert, journalist Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update on Isak potentially moving to Anfield.

After Liverpool spent an initial £69m to sign Ekitike on Wednesday, some may have felt Slot would turn attention to other areas of the squad.

However, it has been clear for a while that Isak is the man they really want at centre-forward.

And, taking to X following news of the Swede’s transfer request, Romano says a Liverpool bid for Isak is possible if Newcastle open the door to a sale.

“Understand Alexander Isak remains a target for Liverpool even after signing Ekitike… but depends on Newcastle,” the transfer expert reports.

“If Newcastle open doors to an exit and LFC sell [Luis] Diaz, they can bid after direct contact made 10 days ago.

“Isak, not in concrete talks with Al Hilal so far.”

The fact that Isak is ready to leave Newcastle does not automatically make him a Liverpool player, of course.

Plenty still has to happen – and lots of money has to be spent – for that to come about.

Another factor to take into account is that with Isak seemingly gettable at the right price, other clubs may throw their hats into the ring.

And according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are ready to make an offer to buy the Sweden international.

“LFC told Newcastle prior to signing Hugo Ekitike they were prepared to pay a British transfer record fee,” says Jacobs.

“Another attacker is still possible for Liverpool if Luis Diaz is sold, and with Darwin Nunez expected to leave.

Another approach is not ruled out.

“Hilal have told Newcastle they are ready to make a significant offer despite no engagement yet on player side.

Isak has not shown encouragement to Saudi so far.

“Isak wants to assess options rather than committing now to a new Newcastle contract.
