Manchester United have been told they are in a "false position" ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League table.

The Old Trafford side travel to Anfield on Sunday having moved three points clear of the champions with 21 games of the season remaining following a 1-0 win at Burnley on Tuesday.

While fellow title contenders Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have all had to grapple with major injury concerns this campaign, United have had no such worries.

And former Liverpool wing-back Jason McAteer has questioned whether Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's side will be able to last the distance in the title race.

"As far as Man United sitting top of the table, I do think it's a false position," said McAteer.

"Burnley gave them a tough game and they came through it, they showed a bit of resilience. There's a bit of team spirit coming at Manchester United.

"I think Ole hasn't dealt with what other teams have dealt with in terms of a lot of injuries this season. He's had a lot of players to pick from.

"He's rotated the squad at times, as you've seen the other night with (Paul) Pogba playing in midfield with (Nemanja) Matic. I fully expect Fred and (Scott) McTominay to come back in (against Liverpool).

"But I would say come the end of the season, I think Liverpool and Manchester City will be fighting it out. I think Manchester United will drop off."

Liverpool are the final team of last season's top six United will face this season having drawn with Manchester City, Chelsea and Leicester and lost at home to Tottenham.

They were also beaten at home by Arsenal in the Premier League and neighbours City in the League Cup, and were eliminated from the Champions League after defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig despite having beaten the duo earlier in the competition.

And speaking to Sky Sports, McAteer said: "If you look at United's results when they have played the likes of Leipzig, PSG, Man City, Arsenal, they haven't come through those games.

"And it just tells me, when the big occasion comes, can Manchester United actually do it?"
