A new documentary set to air on UK television will tell the story of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s rise to the pinnacle of English, European and World football.

Jurgen Klopp : Germany’s Greatest Export is set to air this Monday (3 August) on Channel 4 at 10pm and looks set to offer a fascinating insight into the man who delivered Liverpool’s first league title after a wait of 30 years.

Featuring interviews with former Liverpool stars like former Steven Gerrard, Sir Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes and Steve McManaman, the 60-minute documentary, made in partnership with German beer ERDINGER Weissbräu who Klopp is an ambassador for, will chart the journeys made by both Liverpool the club and the iconic boss himself since the significant year of 1990.

It was then of course when the Reds won their 18th championship under Kenny Dalglish - the club's 10th league title in 15 seasons - and also when a 23-year-old Klopp signed his first professional contract with Mainz 05.

It was there that Klopp spent the rest of his playing career, finishing as the club's record goalscorer, before taking charge as manager in February 2001 initially on a temporary basis and saving them from relegation to German football's third tier.

He ultimately led them into the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history in 2004 and kept them there for three seasons before taking charge at Borussia Dortmund where he revitalised one of German football's sleeping giants, winning two league titles ahead of powerhouse club Bayern Munich and taking them to a Champions League final and, in doing so, attracting the attention of some of Europe's top clubs including Liverpool who brought him in as manager in October 2015.

The new documentary will follow the story of both Liverpool and Klopp from 1990 to the point where their paths crossed and footballing history was made, with the German securing the club's sixth European Cup in Madrid last season before ending the club's 30-year wait for the holy grail of a 19th league title earlier this summer.

Anfield icon Steven Gerrard, who worked alongside Klopp during the early years of his reign as an Academy coach before moving to Scotland to manager Glasgow Rangers, said of Klopp's time at Dortmund: "A couple of years before Liverpool came he’s knocking the likes of Real Madrid out of tournaments.

"He took a team, without spending huge amounts of money and he’s putting them alongside the Barcelonas, the Real Madrids, the AC Milans, all the teams that had been doing well in Europe, Jurgen Klopp took Borussia Dortmund there.

"He’d even knocked Bayern Munich off their perch."

Sir Kenny Dalglish, now a club director and on the podium last week where he gave Klopp a big hug before the Premier League title was presented, said of his arrival at Anfield following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers: "When he was appointed everyone was really excited and he nailed himself to the people when he said ‘I’m the normal one’ because that’s what the Liverpool people are, they just want people to be normal, very good at their job but they don’t need it slammed in their face every two minutes.

"It’s important that the club has a feelgood factor, Jurgen certainly brought that in and that’s the way it used to be at Liverpool.

"I don’t think it’s a coincidence that that was when it was successful as well.

"One area where Jurgen is brilliant, it is not about me, me, me it is about us, it is about Liverpool, it is about the supporters and Liverpool has always been close to the community and he has epitomized that and bought into that and agreed with it.”

German football legend Jurgen Klinsmann, who won the World Cup in 1990 and managed the national team to the semi-finals on home turf in 2006, also features in the programme and reveals how he also thought Klopp and Liverpool would make a good match.

“The leadership role of a manager nowadays is humungous", Klinsman said.

"When he and Liverpool Football Club both decided to get together and start this adventure, I knew he was going to do well.

“I managed once against Jürgen Klopp, in the year 2008-2009 and I was Bayern Munich coach and I think he won it…”
