'Very clear': Fabrizio Romano suggests one way Liverpool could still sign Alexander Isak this summer

Liverpool’s summer transfer window plans are becoming more clear as the season edges towards its finish.

It has been a slight slog for the Reds ever since they confirmed themselves as champions at the end of April.

No wins, two defeats and a draw have not necessarily dampened fans’ spirits, but it has increased anticipation ahead of the summer market.

Part of the reason supporters’ anticipation is growing is that a surprise move for Florian Wirtz appears to be gathering pace.

Latest reports suggest Bayern Munich are growing fearful Liverpool could pip them to Wirtz in what would be a mega deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

So far, little has been reported about how Liverpool’s big-money pursuit of the German could impact the man previously seen as their top attacking target, Alexander Isak.

With Isak’s situation still very much one to watch, though, journalist Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update on Liverpool’s interest.

Isak has had a remarkable season for Newcastle, bagging himself 23 Premier League goals and earning a nomination for the division’s player of the season award.

For Liverpool fans, he would represent the dream signing at number nine this summer.

And according to Romano, the Reds have very much been trying to find out how available the 25-year-old is.

However, after seeing enquiries rebuffed, Liverpool will reportedly have to do something ‘completely crazy’ to sign him.

“On Isak the message coming from Newcastle is very clear,” the transfer expert told his YouTube channel.

“Especially in case of Champions League football, the very clear idea of all the people at the club is that Alexander Isak will be part of Newcastle’s squad next season.

“Liverpool had some had contacts at the beginning of the summer transfer window, it’s not started yet officially, but from April, May to understand the situation of Alexander Isak,” Romano continues.

“But the message from Newcastle was very clear: they don’t want to sell the player.

“Same for Arsenal, he’s always been the number one desire for Mikel Arteta but they understand that it’s probably not going to be possible this summer unless they do something completely crazy in terms of transfer fee and offer to the player.

Not an easy deal at all.”

As Liverpool’s focus has shifted towards Wirtz, it has become clear that the money needed to get him from Bayer Leverkusen is also going to be huge.

As a result, some have pondered whether Wirtz is actually the new striker Arne Slot is most keen on, rather than Isak.

However, Wirtz is not an orthodox number nine by any stretch of the imagination and although Slot could be planning to use him as Liverpool’s most advanced player, that may represent a gamble.

Instead, it does feel more likely that the Reds are targeting a new striker alongside the 22-year-old.

While that sounds an unbelievable amount to pay for two players, the money is arguably there at Liverpool and with sales expected to bring in a good amount too, we wouldn’t say Wirtz and Isak joining together is completely out of the question just yet.
