‘Very impressed’: Liverpool fans told new signing is a ‘striker’s dream’, and it’s not Florian Wirtz

Liverpool concluded their pre-season with a 3-2 win against Athletic Bilbao.

The Reds are now one step closer to beginning their title defence and despite it just being a pre-season game, there were many positive things to take from the victory.

All of their new signings were handed their Anfield debuts and all of them seriously impressed, with Arne Slot now having plenty of options to choose from.

The attack in particular is where Liverpool excelled, with the link-up play from certain players being nothing short of spectacular.

However, there was one player especially who impressed in the final third and was labelled as a ‘striker’s dream’ by former Red Ray Houghton, but it was not Florian Wirtz.

Liverpool have been synonymous with over-lapping full-backs over the years, with this being a key part of their success.

With Andy Robertson slowing up and Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving, a refresh was needed in this area of the pitch, and it looks as if Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong will be good additions.

The latter was the one who impressed the most, with Houghton believing that he will really help in the final third next season.

Frimpong was excellent going forward, he’s a striker’s dream because he puts the ball in early into the box and creates opportunities that way,” Houghton told LFCTV.

“He’s not always going to get forward like that next season because he will have to do his defensive duties.

I was very impressed with his attacking prowess.”

Fans were also left in awe by Frimpong’s performance, with the Dutchman putting forward a real case as to why he should be the starting left-back for the upcoming season.

Pre-season suggested that Conor Bradley might have been Slot’s first-choice right-back for the new season as he started the majority of games.

In fact, Frimpong had not actually started a match at right-back until the final game against Bilbao, although he certainly took his chance when he got it.

And, with Bradley picking up a slight knock, it will be the Dutchman who will likely start against Crystal Palace on Sunday, another match where he could move further ahead of Bradley in the pecking order.

Either way, the competition is certainly good and it is a good problem for Slot to have, although it will cause him a selection headache further down the line.
