Things were made interesting by Marinos taking the lead in the second-half, and a shock briefly looked to be on the cards.

But Liverpool quickly turned things around, Florian Wirtz bagging his first goal for the club, before youngsters Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha completed the turnaround.

Arne Slot had reason to be pleased after the game, with more vital minutes in the bank for many of his key players.

And looking back on what he could take from the match in Japan, Slot said there was one big positive for he and the Liverpool coaching staff.

Although there is a big difference in quality between Liverpool and Marinos, the J.

League side showed they can play a bit by taking the lead at the Nissan Stadium.

Reds supporters may have been fearing the worst, but Slot’s team have shown brilliant powers of recovery during his time in charge.

This was evidence again as Wirtz quickly hit back, and speaking in his post-match press conference, the Liverpool head coach said he was very happy with his team’s ability to bounce back.

“Good game against an opponent already in the middle of the season, used to the circumstances over here so they made it an intense game for us, which is always nice to have in pre-season,” Slot remarked.

“I’ve seen a few very positive things, for example us coming back from going 1-0 down, which is something we did last season a lot of times.

“Seeing players impacting the game, I saw more than a few times some very good moments in build up.”

Despite the clear positive of Liverpool digging in and fighting back against a team with superior match fitness levels, there were some negatives from the Reds’ performance in Yokohama.

And Slot pinpointed these post-match too, suggesting that the intensity of their training camp and the heat in Japan may have factored into some lethargy in defensive situations.

“What I also saw in the goal we conceded and in the first-half a big chance we conceded, is that we have to work harder in those moments,” said the Dutchman.

It could be with a tough training camp, it could be with the heat but that’s something we definitely need to improve before Bilbao, who we play next.”

Liverpool have less than one week to up their fitness levels once again, with Athletic coming to Anfield for what will be an emotional occasion next Monday.
