Kostas Tsimikas has been given a chance to shine on loan, and he has proved that he could still be a quality player for Liverpool.

It was a summer that saw the Reds reshape their squad to usher in a new-look side for their defence of the Premier League title following the success of Arne Slot’s first season at the club.

Players who had been successful under Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at the club, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz, made way for fresh faces like Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike.

At left-back, there was also a key change as Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, which has meant that Andy Robertson has dropped to second choice in the team.

This change meant Tsimikas had to make way as he would not be guaranteed enough, or any, game time at the club, so he made his move to AS Roma on loan for the season.

The Greek player was always a solid second option for the Reds in League Cup games or as a rotation for Robertson, but never had a real opportunity to make an impact as a starter.

Now, in his first Europa League game for his new club, the 29-year-old has made his presence known with a brilliant assist against OGC Nice.

A ball sent down the left-hand side to Tsimikas saw him whip it into the box, where it found its way perfectly to the foot of the incoming Gianluca Mancini, putting the Italian side two goals ahead.

This cross was well-placed, and it was one of his three accurate balls into the box from nine attempts, which shows he is getting more freedom and space to be a creative force down his flank.

His passing accuracy was 84% for the game, and he was able to make three key passes within that.

These statistics are proof that he still has a lot to offer Liverpool, and he would still be a good backup option to Kerkez for cup games or when the Hungarian needs a rest.

The only way he would be able to rejoin the squad is if Robertson were to leave the club next summer when his contract expires.

It is hoped that he will re-sign for an extra year because his experience is invaluable to the dressing room, but if he is looking for a different challenge towards the end of his career, the ‘Greek Scouser’ would be a perfect option.

While he may be looking at trying to be a starter at a different club, the opportunity to be the second choice left-back at the Reds could still offer him what he needs, even if it is just for a year.

It will be interesting to see how his loan spell at Roma develops, but judging by this game in the Europa League, there are grounds to say he may be a big success during his Italian excursion.
