The news that Diogo Jota will not be arriving for pre-season training at Liverpool next week is still sinking in.

Jota should have been gearing up to be back amongst his friends and colleagues ahead of another campaign as a Red.

Instead, his family and friends buried him and his brother, Andre Silva, on an incredibly emotional Saturday in his hometown of Gondomar.

That Jota is gone may not ever hit home for Liverpool fans who watched him week in week out at Anfield for five years.

It does not seem real.

One crumb of comfort throughout this tragedy has been the way the footballing community has come together to pay their respects to Diogo and Andre.

That continued on the day of his funeral, with the Portugal national team posting a beautiful video tribute detailing Jota’s time with the Selecao.

Jota was part of the team that won Portugal’s second UEFA Nations League trophy less than one month before his death.

Ultimately, the last appearance of his life came on June 8th in Munich, when he featured for 15 minutes of extra time in the final against Spain.

That was the Liverpool man’s 49th cap for Portugal, for whom he scored 14 goals.

With his first appearance coming in November 2019, Jota was part of the national team for more than half a decade.

And this stellar service was detailed in a superb video posted on the Portugal national team’s Instagram page on Saturday.

Set to a hauntingly simple backing track, the clip showed a smiling Jota in training and scoring goals alongside his colleagues and countrymen.

One heart-breaking moment sees the late Liverpool star holding up a mini-kit with the name of his second son, Dinis, on the back with No.

21.

The video ends with Jota smiling with the Nations League trophy, before the message ‘Forever.

Para Sempre’ is displayed.

With Cristiano Ronaldo around, as well as a brilliant supporting cast, it felt as though Jota never truly got the recognition he deserved for the part he played with Portugal.

After his first cap in 2019, he was a near fixture in the national team over the next five-and-a-half years.

14 goals in 49 appearances, many of which were not starts, is an excellent record and demonstrates why Jota finished above Ian Rush in goals per game for Liverpool in the Premier League.

He was clearly extremely well liked within the group, with many of his international teammates paying their respects at Jota’s funeral on Saturday.

As Liverpool fans continue to mourn the loss of Jota, it is important to remember that supporters of the Portuguese national team, as well as those of Wolves, also lost someone incredibly important to them.
