Man City legend Vincent Kompany has been mooted as Pep Guardiola’s replacement by a pundit who is ‘convinced’ that the Spaniard will leave his post soon.
Man City‘s failure to win a major trophy for the first time in eight years last season led to many questions around Pep Guardiola‘s future in charge of the club ahead of the new campaign.
The Catalan boss is one of the most successful managers in football history, with 12 league titles to his name across his post-playing career, but some cracks have formed at the Etihad Stadium in recent times as Liverpool ended their four-year dominance in 2024-25.
Football Insider revealed on 5 September that Man City’s poor start to the new season had left Guardiola under pressure after back-to-back defeats, but they have bounced back with wins against Man United and Napoli before a 1-1 draw against Arsenal.
They are already eight points off first-placed Liverpool, and his future still remains uncertain as long as City are not challenging at the top of the league, with Vincent Kompany now tipped to take over at the end of this campaign.

Former City captain Kompany has had an impressive rise as a manager over the last few years to now be taking charge of Bayern Munich, after he led Burnley to Championship promotion in 2023 before they were relegated the year after.
He led Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2024-25, his debut season in charge, and they are currently top of the league with four wins from as many games to begin their defence of their crown with aplomb.

BeIN SPORTS presenter and broadcaster Richard Keys admitted on his blog post on Tuesday (23 September) that he believes that Guardiola will leave City at the end of this season, with his commitment questioned, while Kompany will take over due to his legendary status and rapport with the club’s fans.
He said: “I still don’t think Guardiola looks wholly committed and I’m even more convinced this will be his last season.
a full year before it happened, that he would get the City job.
“His replacement will be Vincent Kompany.
He’s just about the only man who could follow Guardiola and get a fair reception from City fans, who still adore him.”
Kompany made 360 appearances in 11 years at Man City and led them to four Premier League titles as captain, as well as two FA Cup and four League Cup triumphs.
He became more injury-prone towards the end of his playing career, but still played 62 times under Guardiola at City in the final three seasons of his spell at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola insisted that he can foresee Kompany returning to the club as boss in the future back in March 2023, when he was preparing his team to play against the Belgian’s Burnley side, saying: “He will be back sooner or later.
I don’t know when but it’s going to happen.”
It certainly seems likely, given his exploits so far at Bayern, but whether the German giants will allow him to leave to join a direct European rival anytime soon is unclear, so it may well take Kompany walking away from his job for a move back to City to happen.
